Biologic Infusions
MedRx Infusion is a specialty pharmacy that dispenses biologic medications. When the prescriber approves an infused biologic at home, MedRx delivers it at no charge and can send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to administer it.
What is a biologic infusion?
A biologic is a medication made from living cells. Many biologics block a protein involved in inflammation. A biologic infusion is a biologic given slowly into a vein (intravenously).
Some biologics are given intravenously, others as subcutaneous injections (under the skin) that the patient or a caregiver can give after training, and some in both forms. The prescriber determines which form is appropriate.
MedRx Infusion Clinical Pharmacy is a specialty pharmacy and a home infusion pharmacy, serving patients in 43 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Therapy starts with a referral from the prescriber's office.
Biologic infusions MedRx dispenses, by condition
Each biologic is FDA-approved for its own conditions. These are given intravenously:
- Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis: Entyvio (vedolizumab), Remicade (infliximab) and its biosimilars Inflectra (infliximab-dyyb), Avsola (infliximab-axxq) and Renflexis (infliximab-abda), Stelara (ustekinumab), Skyrizi (risankizumab-rzaa), Tremfya (guselkumab) and Omvoh (mirikizumab-mrkz).
- Rheumatoid arthritis: Remicade, Simponi Aria (golimumab), Orencia (abatacept), Actemra (tocilizumab) and Rituxan (rituximab).
- Psoriatic arthritis: Remicade, Simponi Aria and Orencia.
- Ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis of the spine): Remicade and Simponi Aria.
- Polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (arthritis in many joints in children): Simponi Aria, Orencia and Actemra.
- Plaque psoriasis: Remicade.
- Systemic lupus erythematosus: Benlysta (belimumab) and Saphnelo (anifrolumab-fnia). Benlysta is also approved for lupus nephritis, kidney disease caused by lupus.
- Multiple sclerosis (MS): Ocrevus (ocrelizumab) and Briumvi (ublituximab-xiiy).
- Generalized myasthenia gravis: Vyvgart (efgartigimod alfa-fcab) and Soliris (eculizumab) intravenously, and Rystiggo (rozanolixizumab-noli), given subcutaneously with a small pump by a healthcare professional.
- Thyroid eye disease: Tepezza (teprotumumab-trbw).
- Granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis (GPA and MPA vasculitis), and pemphigus vulgaris: Rituxan.
- Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD): Soliris. Soliris is available only through a REMS safety program; MedRx Infusion is certified to dispense it.

Where the infusion is given
When the prescriber approves an infusion at home, MedRx sends a skilled, trusted and licensed nurse from an accredited nursing agency to administer it. The nurse monitors vital signs and adverse reactions throughout the infusion.
Some labels limit where a biologic is given:
- Ocrevus and Briumvi: the labels call for close supervision by an experienced healthcare professional, premedication to lower the risk of infusion reactions, and at least an hour of observation afterward. The prescriber determines where they are given.
- Vyepti (eptinezumab-jjmr), for migraine prevention, and the intravenous form of Cosentyx (secukinumab) are given in a healthcare setting, as their labels require. MedRx Infusion dispenses them for the setting where they are given.
Biologic injections given at home
Many biologics are given as subcutaneous injections, for example Humira (adalimumab), Enbrel (etanercept), Dupixent (dupilumab) and Xolair (omalizumab). After training, the patient or a caregiver can give them at home. MedRx ships them to the patient's door at no charge, and a nurse can teach the injection technique.
Xolair is started in a healthcare setting. After at least three doses without a serious allergic reaction, the prescriber may allow the patient or a caregiver to give it at home.
Infusions for autoimmune conditions
In an autoimmune condition, the immune system attacks the body's own healthy tissue. Rheumatoid arthritis is one: the immune system attacks the joints. Infusions are used for many autoimmune and other inflammatory conditions.
MedRx Infusion dispenses infusions for:
- Joint, gut and skin conditions: the biologic infusions above, for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and psoriasis.
- Nerve and muscle conditions: intravenous immune globulin for CIDP, and biologics for myasthenia gravis. See nerve and muscle conditions.
- Skin and muscle conditions: immune globulin for dermatomyositis. See skin conditions.
The prescriber determines which treatment is appropriate.
How home biologic infusion works
- The prescriber's office faxes or phones in a referral. The referral form for the specialty should go with recent clinical notes and laboratory results.
- MedRx's intake team verifies insurance benefits and obtains prior authorization when the plan requires it.
- Medication and supplies are delivered to the patient's door at no charge. Next-day delivery is available; timing varies by location.
- A skilled, trusted and licensed nurse from an accredited nursing agency administers the infusion and monitors vital signs and adverse reactions.
- A MedRx pharmacist is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Insurance and cost
Health plans often require prior authorization for biologics. MedRx's intake team checks coverage and works with the prescriber's office on the paperwork before the first delivery.
Where out-of-pocket costs are a barrier, MedRx helps patients find and apply for copay assistance, grants and other financial aid. Most manufacturers of these biologics also run support programs for eligible patients; each medication page names its program.
