Xolair (omalizumab)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
Xolair is a biologic medicine (a medicine made from living cells). It attaches to IgE, an antibody that plays a part in allergic reactions, so less IgE is free to set off allergy cells.
MedRx Infusion can fill Xolair with a prescription and deliver it free to your door.
What Xolair is prescribed for
- Allergic asthma: adults and children 6 years and older with moderate to severe persistent asthma who have a positive skin or blood test to an allergen in the air all year round, and whose symptoms are not well controlled with inhaled steroids (inhaled corticosteroids); not for sudden breathing problems.
- Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP): adults 18 years and older with nasal polyps (growths in the nose and sinuses) that did not respond well enough to steroid nose sprays; used as an add-on maintenance treatment (taken along with your other daily medicines).
- IgE-mediated food allergy: adults and children 1 year and older with IgE-mediated food allergy, to lower allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, that may happen after accidental contact with one or more foods; used along with avoiding those foods, and not for emergency treatment of a reaction.
- Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU): adults and children 12 years and older with chronic spontaneous urticaria (long-lasting hives with no known cause) who still have symptoms while taking H1 antihistamines (allergy pills); not for other kinds of hives.
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Xolair is right for you.
How Xolair is given
Injection under the skin, given by a healthcare professional, or you or a caregiver after training.
The label says treatment starts in a healthcare setting. After at least three doses without a serious allergic reaction, your prescriber may let you or a caregiver give the shots at home after training, and a nurse can show you how.
Storage: Keep prefilled syringes and autoinjectors in the refrigerator in the original carton, away from direct sunlight, and do not freeze them. They can be out of the refrigerator for no more than 2 days in total.
Before you start
Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:
- a blood test for total IgE (an allergy antibody), except for chronic hives
- a check of your body weight, except for chronic hives
Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about anaphylaxis (a sudden, severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening), which can happen after any dose, even the first. Treatment starts in a healthcare setting, where you are watched for a while after each shot.
