Vancomycin (vancomycin hydrochloride)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
Vancomycin is an antibiotic (a medicine used to treat infections caused by bacteria) in a group called glycopeptides. It mainly works by stopping bacteria from building their cell walls.
MedRx Infusion can fill Vancomycin with a prescription and deliver it free to your door.
What Vancomycin is prescribed for
- Septicemia (blood infection): adults and children, including newborns, with septicemia (a serious blood infection) caused by MRSA (a staph germ that resists many antibiotics) or coagulase-negative staph (a related group of staph germs). For Staphylococcus aureus that is not MRSA, it is used only in people who are allergic to penicillin or who cannot take, or did not get better with, penicillins or cephalosporins.
- Infective endocarditis: adults and children, including newborns, with endocarditis (an infection of the heart's lining or valves) caused by MRSA, certain strep germs, enterococcus (given with an aminoglycoside, another type of antibiotic) or corynebacterium, or by other Staphylococcus aureus with the same limits as for blood infections; also, together with rifampin and an aminoglycoside, early infection of an artificial heart valve caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis.
- Skin and skin structure infections: adults and children, including newborns, with infections of the skin and the tissue under it caused by MRSA or coagulase-negative staph, or by other Staphylococcus aureus with the same limits as for blood infections.
- Bone infections: adults and children, including newborns, with bone infections caused by MRSA or coagulase-negative staph, or by other Staphylococcus aureus with the same limits as for blood infections.
- Lower respiratory tract infections: adults and children, including newborns, with lung infections (lower respiratory tract infections) caused by MRSA, or by other Staphylococcus aureus with the same limits as for blood infections.
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Vancomycin is right for you.
