Tobramycin (tobramycin)

Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.

Tobramycin is an antibiotic in a group called aminoglycosides. It stops bacteria from making the proteins they need to live. It is used for serious bacterial infections.

MedRx Infusion can fill Tobramycin with a prescription and deliver it free to your door.

What Tobramycin is prescribed for

  • Blood infection (septicemia): adults and children with serious blood infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli or Klebsiella.
  • Lower respiratory tract infections: people with serious lung and airway infections caused by certain bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Serious brain and spinal cord infections (meningitis): people with serious central nervous system infections caused by bacteria that tobramycin can treat.
  • Intra-abdominal infections: people with serious infections inside the belly, including peritonitis (infection of the belly lining).
  • Skin, bone and skin structure infections: people with serious infections of the skin, bone or tissue under the skin.
  • Complicated urinary tract infections: people with complicated or repeat urinary tract infections; not for a first, simple infection unless the germ resists safer antibiotics.
  • Serious staph infections: people with serious Staphylococcus (staph) infections who cannot take penicillin or other less harmful medicines, when lab tests and the doctor's judgment support it.

A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Tobramycin is right for you.

How Tobramycin is given

IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.

Injection into a muscle, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.

Before you start

Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:

  • a culture (a lab test of a sample) to find the germ and see whether tobramycin can treat it
  • a check of your current body weight
  • blood and urine tests of how well your kidneys work
  • hearing tests (audiograms) when possible, especially for people at higher risk of hearing loss
  • questions about whether anyone in your mother's family lost their hearing from this type of antibiotic (aminoglycosides)

Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about the risk of permanent hearing loss and balance problems, kidney damage, and other nerve problems such as numbness, muscle twitching and seizures. It also warns against using it with certain other medicines that can harm the kidneys or nerves, including strong water pills (diuretics), and says it can harm an unborn baby.
