Solu-Medrol (methylprednisolone sodium succinate)

Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.

Solu-Medrol is a corticosteroid (steroid) medicine given by IV or as a shot into a muscle when medicine by mouth is not an option. It calms inflammation and changes how the immune system responds.

MedRx Infusion can fill Solu-Medrol with a prescription and deliver it free to your door.

What Solu-Medrol is prescribed for

  • Severe allergic conditions: people with severe or disabling allergic conditions that did not get better with usual treatment, including asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis (a rash from touching something), drug allergic reactions, serum sickness and reactions to blood transfusions.
  • Skin diseases: people with bullous dermatitis herpetiformis, exfoliative erythroderma, mycosis fungoides, pemphigus or severe erythema multiforme (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Hormone (endocrine) disorders: people with primary or secondary adrenal insufficiency (the adrenal glands do not make enough hormones; hydrocortisone or cortisone is the first choice), congenital adrenal hyperplasia, high blood calcium linked to cancer, or nonsuppurative thyroiditis.
  • Bowel diseases: people with regional enteritis (Crohn's disease) or ulcerative colitis, to help them through a critical period of the disease.
  • Blood disorders: people with acquired (autoimmune) hemolytic anemia, Diamond-Blackfan anemia, pure red cell aplasia, selected cases of secondary thrombocytopenia (low platelets), or adults with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), by IV only.
  • Leukemia and lymphoma: people with leukemia or lymphoma, for palliative care (care to ease symptoms).
  • Nervous system conditions: people with a sudden flare-up of multiple sclerosis (MS), or brain swelling from a brain tumor or brain surgery.
  • Eye diseases: people with sympathetic ophthalmia, uveitis, or eye inflammation that did not get better with steroid eye drops.
  • Kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome): people with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome or nephrotic syndrome caused by lupus (kidney conditions that leak protein into the urine), to increase urine flow or bring the protein loss into remission.
  • Lung diseases: people with berylliosis, fulminating or disseminated lung tuberculosis (together with TB medicines), idiopathic eosinophilic pneumonias, or symptomatic sarcoidosis.
  • Rheumatic disorders: people with a flare-up of acute gouty arthritis, acute rheumatic carditis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, including juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, as short-term add-on treatment; and people with dermatomyositis, polymyositis, temporal arteritis or systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus).
  • Other conditions: people with trichinosis (a worm infection) that affects the nerves or heart, or tuberculous meningitis with a blockage or threatened blockage of spinal fluid flow, together with TB medicines.

How Solu-Medrol is given

IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.

Before you start

Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:

  • a blood test for hepatitis B before longer treatment that weakens the immune system
  • tests to rule out amebiasis (a gut infection caused by a parasite) if you have spent time in the tropics or have diarrhea with no known cause
  • questions about a cow's milk allergy, because one vial size contains an ingredient made from cow's milk

Read the Medication Guide and the full Solu-Medrol prescribing information, and ask your prescriber or our pharmacists about side effects. Our pharmacists are on call 24 hours a day.
