Prolia (denosumab)

Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.

Prolia is a biologic medicine. It blocks a protein called RANK ligand, which the body needs to make and run the cells that break down bone.

MedRx Infusion can fill Prolia with a prescription and deliver it free to your door. This page also covers Jubbonti (denosumab-bbdz).

What Prolia is prescribed for

  • Osteoporosis after menopause: women past menopause with osteoporosis (weak, thin bones) who are at high risk of breaking a bone, or when other osteoporosis medicines did not work or could not be tolerated.
  • Osteoporosis in men: men with osteoporosis who are at high risk of breaking a bone, or when other osteoporosis medicines did not work or could not be tolerated, to increase bone mass.
  • Steroid-induced osteoporosis: men and women at high risk of breaking a bone who are starting or staying on steroid medicines taken by mouth or by IV (systemic glucocorticoids) and expect to take them for at least 6 months.
  • Bone loss from prostate cancer treatment: men at high risk of breaking a bone who get hormone therapy (androgen deprivation therapy) for prostate cancer that has not spread, to increase bone mass.
  • Bone loss from breast cancer treatment: women at high risk of breaking a bone who get aromatase inhibitor therapy (a hormone-blocking medicine) after breast cancer treatment, to increase bone mass.

A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Prolia is right for you.

How Prolia is given

Injection under the skin, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.

Before you start

Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:

  • a pregnancy test for women who can become pregnant
  • a blood test for calcium; low calcium must be treated before starting
  • for people with advanced kidney disease, blood tests for kidney-related bone and mineral problems (CKD-MBD), including parathyroid hormone, calcium and vitamin D
  • a routine mouth exam, and a dental exam if you have risk factors for jaw bone problems

Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about severe low blood calcium (hypocalcemia) in people with advanced kidney disease, including people on dialysis. Severe low calcium has led to hospital stays and deaths.

Read the Medication Guide and the full Prolia prescribing information, and ask your prescriber or our pharmacists about side effects. Our pharmacists are on call 24 hours a day.
