Privigen, immune globulin intravenous (human)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
Privigen is an immune globulin medicine made from human plasma (the liquid part of blood). It gives your body IgG antibodies, which are proteins the immune system uses to fight germs. How it works is not fully known.
MedRx Infusion can fill Privigen with a prescription and deliver it free to your door.
What Privigen is prescribed for
- Primary humoral immunodeficiency (PI): people with PI (a group of conditions, often inherited, in which the body does not make enough working antibodies).
- Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP): people 15 years and older with chronic ITP (too few platelets, the blood cells that help blood clot), to raise platelet counts.
- Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP): adults with CIDP (chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, a nerve condition that causes weakness and numbness in the arms and legs). Ongoing (maintenance) treatment has not been studied for longer than 6 months.
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Privigen is right for you.
How Privigen is given
IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.
Before you start
Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:
- a blood test to check how well your kidneys work
- for people at risk of thick blood (hyperviscosity), a blood test of how thick the blood is
- for people at higher risk of hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells), a blood test of hemoglobin or hematocrit before the infusion
- questions about high blood pressure and blood pressure medicines, and a blood pressure check before the infusion
Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about the risk of blood clots (thrombosis). It also warns about kidney problems, including kidney failure, with immune globulin given by vein.
