Octagam, immune globulin intravenous (human)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
Octagam is an immune globulin medicine made from human plasma (the liquid part of blood). It gives your body IgG antibodies, which are proteins the immune system uses to fight germs. How it works in ITP and dermatomyositis is not fully known.
MedRx Infusion can fill Octagam with a prescription and deliver it free to your door. This page also covers Octagam 10% (immune globulin intravenous, human).
What Octagam is prescribed for
- Primary humoral immunodeficiency (PI): people with PI (a group of conditions, often inherited, in which the body does not make enough working antibodies); Octagam 5% only.
- Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP): adults with chronic ITP (too few platelets, the blood cells that help blood clot), to raise platelet counts to control or prevent bleeding; Octagam 10% only.
- Dermatomyositis: adults with dermatomyositis (an inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness and a skin rash); Octagam 10% only.
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Octagam is right for you.
How Octagam is given
IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.
Before you start
Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:
- a blood test to check how well your kidneys work
- for people at risk of thick blood (hyperviscosity), a blood test of how thick the blood is
- for people at higher risk of hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells), a blood test of hemoglobin or hematocrit (Octagam 10%)
Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about the risk of blood clots (thrombosis). It also warns about kidney problems, including kidney failure, with immune globulin given by vein.
