Moxifloxacin (moxifloxacin hydrochloride)

Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.

Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic in a group called fluoroquinolones. It blocks enzymes that bacteria need to copy their DNA. The IV form is for adults only.

MedRx Infusion can fill Moxifloxacin with a prescription and deliver it free to your door.

What Moxifloxacin is prescribed for

  • Community-acquired pneumonia: adults 18 years and older with lung infection caught outside a hospital.
  • Uncomplicated skin infections: adults 18 years and older.
  • Complicated skin infections: adults 18 years and older.
  • Complicated intra-abdominal infections: adults 18 years and older with serious infections inside the belly, including abscesses (pockets of pus).
  • Plague: adults 18 years and older, to treat plague (including plague of the lungs or blood) or to prevent it after exposure.
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis: adults 18 years and older with a sinus infection who have no other treatment options.
  • Acute bacterial flare-up of chronic bronchitis: adults 18 years and older with long-term bronchitis (swelling of the airways) who have no other treatment options.

A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Moxifloxacin is right for you.

How Moxifloxacin is given

IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.

Before you start

Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:

  • questions about your health history, such as myasthenia gravis (a disease that causes muscle weakness), past tendon problems, or a bulge in the body's main artery (aortic aneurysm)
  • a check for heart rhythm problems (such as a long QT interval), low potassium or magnesium in the blood, and other medicines you take that can affect heart rhythm

Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about serious side effects that can happen together and may be permanent: tendon problems, including torn tendons, nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), and effects on the brain and mood. It can also make muscle weakness worse in people with myasthenia gravis, and for sinus infections and bronchitis flare-ups it is only for people with no other treatment choice.
