Linezolid (linezolid)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
Linezolid is an antibiotic in a group called oxazolidinones. It stops certain bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply. It is only for infections caused by gram-positive bacteria (one of the two main types of bacteria).
MedRx Infusion can fill Linezolid with a prescription and deliver it free to your door. This page also covers Zyvox (linezolid).
What Linezolid is prescribed for
- Pneumonia caught in a hospital (nosocomial pneumonia): adults and children with lung infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA (staph that resists many antibiotics), or Streptococcus pneumoniae.
- Community-acquired pneumonia: adults and children with lung infection caught outside a hospital, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (including when it is also in the blood) or by staph that is not MRSA.
- Complicated skin infections: adults and children with serious skin infections, including diabetic foot infections, when the infection has not spread to the bone (osteomyelitis).
- Uncomplicated skin infections: adults and children with milder skin infections caused by staph that is not MRSA or by Streptococcus pyogenes; the label lists only the forms taken by mouth (tablets or liquid) for this use.
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) infections: adults and children with infections caused by Enterococcus faecium bacteria that resist the antibiotic vancomycin, including when the bacteria are also in the blood.
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Linezolid is right for you.
How Linezolid is given
IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.
Before you start
Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:
- a review of the medicines you take, because linezolid must not be used with, or within two weeks after, a type of medicine called an MAO inhibitor (MAOI), which includes some antidepressants
Read the Medication Guide and the full Linezolid prescribing information, and ask your prescriber or our pharmacists about side effects. Our pharmacists are on call 24 hours a day.
