How Levofloxacin is given

IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.

Before you start

Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:

  • a culture (a lab test of a sample, such as blood or urine) to find the germ causing the infection and test which antibiotics can treat it
  • questions about your health history, such as myasthenia gravis (a disease that causes muscle weakness), past tendon problems, or a bulge in the body's main artery (aortic aneurysm)
  • a check for heart rhythm problems (such as a long QT interval), low potassium or magnesium in the blood, and other medicines you take that can affect heart rhythm

Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about serious side effects that can happen together and may be permanent: tendon problems, including torn tendons, nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), and effects on the brain and mood. It can also make muscle weakness worse in people with myasthenia gravis, and for sinus infections, bronchitis flare-ups and simple bladder infections it is only for people with no other treatment choice.
