Injectafer (ferric carboxymaltose)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
Injectafer is an iron replacement medicine given into a vein. It gives the body iron, which it uses to make hemoglobin (the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen).
MedRx Infusion can fill Injectafer with a prescription and deliver it free to your door.
What Injectafer is prescribed for
- Iron deficiency anemia: adults and children 1 year and older with iron deficiency anemia (too few red blood cells because of low iron) who could not take iron pills or did not respond well enough to them.
- Iron deficiency anemia with chronic kidney disease: adults with iron deficiency anemia and chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are not on dialysis.
- Iron deficiency with heart failure: adults with iron deficiency and heart failure that causes symptoms with everyday or light activity (NYHA class II or III), to improve exercise capacity.
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Injectafer is right for you.
How Injectafer is given
IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.
Before you start
Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:
- questions about any past reactions to iron given by vein or by shot
- a blood test for phosphate if you are at risk of low phosphate, or before a repeat course within three months; low phosphate should be corrected before treatment
Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about the risk of severe, long-lasting low phosphate in the blood (symptomatic hypophosphatemia). This can lead to soft bones (osteomalacia) and broken bones.
Read the Medication Guide and the full Injectafer prescribing information, and ask your prescriber or our pharmacists about side effects. Our pharmacists are on call 24 hours a day.
