INFeD (iron dextran)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
INFeD is an iron replacement medicine. It gives the body iron to refill low iron stores and to make hemoglobin (the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen).
MedRx Infusion can fill INFeD with a prescription and deliver it free to your door.
What INFeD is prescribed for
- Iron deficiency: adults and children 4 months and older with iron deficiency confirmed by tests, who could not take iron pills or did not respond well enough to them.
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether INFeD is right for you.
How INFeD is given
IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional.
Injection into a muscle, given by a healthcare professional.
The label calls for a small test dose first, and for resuscitation equipment and staff trained to treat serious allergic reactions to be on hand. Your prescriber decides where you get it.
Before you start
Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:
- blood tests that confirm iron deficiency and record your starting hemoglobin, hematocrit and iron levels
- stopping any other iron products, including iron pills
- a small test dose before the first full dose, to check for a serious allergic reaction
- questions about any past reactions to iron given by vein or by shot
Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about the risk of severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic-type reactions), which can be fatal.
Read the Medication Guide and the full INFeD prescribing information, and ask your prescriber or our pharmacists about side effects. Our pharmacists are on call 24 hours a day.
