Gammagard Liquid, immune globulin infusion (human)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
Gammagard Liquid and Gammagard S/D are immune globulin medicines made from human plasma (the liquid part of blood). They give your body IgG antibodies, which are proteins the immune system uses to fight germs. How they work in some conditions is not fully known.
MedRx Infusion can fill Gammagard Liquid with a prescription and deliver it free to your door. This page also covers Gammagard S/D (immune globulin intravenous, human).
What Gammagard Liquid is prescribed for
- Primary humoral immunodeficiency (PI): adults and children 2 years and older with PI (a group of conditions, often inherited, in which the body does not make enough working antibodies); Gammagard Liquid by vein or under the skin, Gammagard S/D by vein.
- Multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN): adults with MMN (a rare nerve condition that causes muscle weakness), as ongoing (maintenance) treatment; Gammagard Liquid only, by vein.
- Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP): adults with CIDP (chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, a nerve condition that causes weakness and numbness in the arms and legs). It was not studied in people who had never had immune globulin before; Gammagard Liquid only, by vein.
- B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL): people with B-cell CLL (a type of blood cancer) who have low antibody levels or repeated bacterial infections, to prevent bacterial infections; Gammagard S/D only.
- Chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP): adults with chronic ITP (too few platelets, the blood cells that help blood clot), to raise platelet counts and to prevent or control bleeding; Gammagard S/D only.
- Kawasaki syndrome: children with Kawasaki syndrome (an illness that causes swelling in blood vessels), to prevent bulges in the heart's arteries (coronary artery aneurysms); Gammagard S/D only.
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Gammagard Liquid is right for you.
How Gammagard Liquid is given
IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.
Infusion under the skin, with a small pump, given by a healthcare professional, or you or a caregiver after training. A nurse can show you or a caregiver how to give it.
Storage: Store Gammagard Liquid in the refrigerator or at room temperature (up to 77°F), in its box to protect it from light. Do not freeze it, and check the expiration date for the way you store it.
Before you start
Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:
- a blood test to check how well your kidneys work
- for people at risk of thick blood (hyperviscosity), a blood test of how thick the blood is
- questions about IgA deficiency (very low levels of an antibody called IgA) and any past allergic reactions to immune globulin or other blood products
- if you are switching from treatment by vein to treatment under the skin, a blood test of your IgG antibody level
Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about the risk of blood clots (thrombosis). It also warns about kidney problems, including kidney failure, with immune globulin given by vein.
