Ferumoxytol (ferumoxytol)

Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.

Ferumoxytol is an iron replacement medicine given by IV. Its iron sits inside a sugar-like (carbohydrate) coating, and the body takes the iron out and uses it to make hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen.

MedRx Infusion can fill Ferumoxytol with a prescription and deliver it free to your door. This page also covers Feraheme (ferumoxytol).

What Ferumoxytol is prescribed for

  • Iron deficiency anemia: adults with iron deficiency anemia (too few healthy red blood cells because of low iron) who could not take iron pills or whose iron pills did not work well enough.
  • Iron deficiency anemia with chronic kidney disease: adults with iron deficiency anemia who have chronic kidney disease (CKD).

A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Ferumoxytol is right for you.

How Ferumoxytol is given

IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional.

The label says to give it only where staff and treatment for serious allergic reactions are ready, and to watch you for at least 30 minutes afterward. Your prescriber decides where you get it.

Before you start

Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:

  • questions about any past allergic reaction to iron given by IV, and about allergies to many medicines
  • blood tests of your iron levels, because it must not be given to people who already have too much iron (iron overload)
  • any planned MRI scans, which should be done first, because this medicine can change MRI pictures for up to 3 months

Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis (a sudden, life-threatening allergic reaction), which have caused deaths. It must be given only where staff and treatments for these reactions are ready right away, and you are watched closely for at least 30 minutes after each infusion.
