Enoxaparin (enoxaparin sodium)
Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.
Enoxaparin is a blood thinner (anticoagulant) called a low molecular weight heparin. It acts mostly against a clotting protein called factor Xa, so blood is less able to form clots.
MedRx Infusion can fill Enoxaparin with a prescription and deliver it free to your door. This page also covers Lovenox (enoxaparin sodium).
What Enoxaparin is prescribed for
- Preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT): people at risk of blood clots in a deep vein (DVT), which can travel to the lungs: during belly (abdominal) surgery for people at risk of clots, hip or knee replacement surgery, or a sudden (acute) illness that keeps someone from moving around much.
- Treating deep vein thrombosis (DVT): people with a new (acute) DVT, given with warfarin: in the hospital, with or without a clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), or at home when there is no clot in the lungs.
- Unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack: people with unstable angina (chest pain from low blood flow to the heart) or a non-Q-wave heart attack, given with aspirin, to prevent problems from low blood flow to the heart (ischemic complications).
- ST-elevation heart attack (STEMI): people having a STEMI (a type of heart attack) who get clot-dissolving medicine (thrombolysis), given with aspirin, whether they are treated with medicines alone or later have a procedure to open the heart arteries (PCI).
A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Enoxaparin is right for you.
How Enoxaparin is given
Injection under the skin, given by a healthcare professional, or you or a caregiver after training.
Most people get enoxaparin as shots under the skin. Your prescriber decides when you can give them yourself at home, and a nurse can show you how. Its IV use is a single injection given in a hospital.
Storage: Store it at room temperature (about 77°F) in its original carton or package until you are ready to use it. Do not keep an opened multiple-dose vial for more than 28 days.
Before you start
Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:
- a check for any bleeding problems (bleeding disorders), unless treatment is needed right away
Important safety information: This medicine has a boxed warning about bleeding in or around the spine (spinal or epidural hematoma) in people who get a spinal or epidural anesthetic or a spinal tap. This bleeding can cause long-term or permanent paralysis (not being able to move).
