Doxycycline (doxycycline)

Filled with a prescription and delivered free to your door, with help on prior authorization.

Doxycycline is an antibiotic in the tetracycline group. It slows the growth of bacteria by stopping them from making proteins. The IV form is used only when medicine by mouth is not right for you, and pills should replace it as soon as possible.

MedRx Infusion can fill Doxycycline with a prescription and deliver it free to your door. This page also covers Doxy 100 (doxycycline).

What Doxycycline is prescribed for

  • Rickettsial infections: people with Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus fever and related infections, Q fever, rickettsialpox or tick fevers (illnesses spread by ticks, lice or fleas).
  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections: people with infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a germ that often infects the lungs.
  • Psittacosis (parrot fever): people with psittacosis or ornithosis, an infection spread by birds.

  • Some gram-positive infections: people with infections caused by Streptococcus bacteria (including Streptococcus pneumoniae) or with respiratory, skin and soft tissue infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, when lab tests show the germ is sensitive to doxycycline.
  • Anthrax: people with anthrax, including people who breathed in anthrax germs, to lower the chance of getting sick or getting worse.
  • Infections when penicillin cannot be used: people who cannot take penicillin and have gonorrhea, meningococcal infection, syphilis, yaws, Listeria, Clostridium, Vincent's infection (trench mouth) or actinomycosis.

A prescription is required. Your prescriber decides whether Doxycycline is right for you.

How Doxycycline is given

IV infusion, given by a healthcare professional. When your prescriber agrees it can be given at home, we send a skilled nurse from an accredited nursing agency to give it.

Before you start

Before the first dose, your prescriber may ask for:

  • a culture and sensitivity test (a lab test of a sample) for some types of bacteria, because many strains resist this group of antibiotics
  • for a sexually transmitted infection when syphilis may also be present, a dark-field exam (a microscope test of a sore) before treatment, then follow-up blood tests

Read the Medication Guide and the full Doxycycline prescribing information, and ask your prescriber or our pharmacists about side effects. Our pharmacists are on call 24 hours a day.
